2016 Central Texas All-Skill Positions Camp (Report & Results)!

Tyler Welch (left) and Brandon Pflueger were the two fastest prospects at the camp.

Justyn Merriweather put his strong arm on display.

This year the Central Texas All-Skill Positions Camp was the first of its kind in it being part of TA's Scouting Scoop, being totally separate from linemen.  The competition was on fire and the prospects did not want to be outdone by the guy lined up across from him.  The individual position coaches selected the guys that they felt were the most consistent during both the drills and 1-on-1's as the top performers of the camp.  All of these prospects should have strong showings this upcoming season on the gridiron.

QB's

Roel Sanchez ('18, San Antonio O'Connor) was voted by the coaches as the camp's top QB. He processed information well and did a great job in the short to medium passes. Justyn Merriweather ('17, Pflugerville) who had just played in his school's Spring game the evening before was not far behind and tested very well for his size and position. FBS schools need not sleep on him. Kyle Irlbeck ('17, Leander) tested well as well and should have a good senior year for the Lions this upcoming season.

RB's

Justin Ward-Mink ('17, Round Rock McNeil) has improved his game so much and has gotten faster over the school year. He will prove to be a heavy dual-threat this season and was voted the camp's top RB. Other guys that stood out well were Jaylan Merriweather ('17, Pflugerville), who showed soft hands in 1-on-1's and tested well, Isaiah Freeman (Rogers), and Jai Garcia (Leander). Erik Argote ('19, San Saba) is a small school prospect that people will become aware of in the near future.

WR's

Malik Jackson ('17, Taylor) was not only the camp's top WR but also the main person that the DB's wanted to challenge in 1-on-1's. He has outstanding ball skills and functional speed. A great leaper as well. Jaquan Tillis ('18, Harker Heights) ran some very pretty routes and has a body mass that is tough for DB's to control at the line of scrimmage. Troy HS had both speed burner Tyler Welch and Isaac Ross representing them well. Pierce ran routes with both confidence and exuberance while Ross was a sure handed guy on the routes he ran. 2018's Dalton Flowers (Leander), Jalen Hughes (San Antonio O'Connor) and Antonio Heard (Teague) were definitely good ones to watch and should have strong junior years this season.

Other intrigues: Josh Howard ('18, Hutto), Mason Klinger ('17, Georgetown East View), Alex Julian ('18, Austin McCallum)

TE's

The two tight ends that were in attendance happened to be the top two ranked in Central Texas for 2018. James Sims (San Antonio Clark) was voted as the top tight end and is a big target that creates mismatch problems and runs good routes. Tyrick James (China Spring) who's ranked #1 at his position, is very strong and sure-handed and will continue to garner FBS interest and offers.

LB's

Thorndale's Hunter Towery ('17) had a great camp and was voted as the top guy at his position on the day. He not only tested well, but picked up on information quickly and ran well with the RB's in 1-on-1's. Robert Anthony Garcia ('18, San Antonio Clark) and Gerius Vela ('17, Taylor) also battled well and were intense as can be during position drills.

Other intrigues: Dalton Spencer ('19, Luling), Dallen Watanabe ('19, New Braunfels Canyon), Anziah Williams ('19, San Antonio Stevens)

DB's

Indeed the DB's were the most exciting guys to watch. Tyrese Heard ('18, Teague) was the consensus top DB. He was all over everything and showed that being from a small school doesn't at all matter when you lace up the cleats. The next two in line were Brandon Pflueger ('17, Round Rock) and Isaiah Levert ('17, Round Rock McNeil). Pflueger displayed audacity in heavily challenging all-comers. He both reads and reacts very well in coverage. Levert was great to watch in how he processed and executed the information when being taught. He knew how to run with WR's and to get his hand in between the receiver and the ball to knock it down. BJ Sculark ('18, Temple) was right behind them with his ability to press and disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage and did well breaking on the football. Trae Cherry ('18, China Spring) showed resilience and reliability despite being fatigued from participating in a 7-on-7 tourney earlier in the day. Both Lawrence Asiedu ('17, Cedar Park Vista Ridge) and Jakobe Davidson ('18, Hutto) were fearless and never backed down. Corey Anzaldua ('18, Gonzales) performed with a huge chip on his shoulder and wasn't shy about giving his opponents such eye contact. Lastly, Kade Mercer ('19 Comanche) is exciting to watch and will only get better with time. Remember that name.

Other intrigues: Jeremy Brown ('17, Brownwood), Antoine Mays ('19, Georgetown East View)

Cameron Cavanaugh ('17, Troy) was a linemen that just wanted to participated in the camp and ended up breaking the 40-yard dash record for his position. He doesn't get credit for the bench press record with 28 reps because he's a lineman benching 185 lbs. Astoundingly, Cavanaugh did really well in the route running by showing such swiftness for his size. Of course no one had success trying to press him at the line of scrimmage.

The 40-yard dash was timed similar to the pro scouts with a hand-held stopwatch that stops after the prospect's whole body crosses the line (legit timing method). In the past, we've made errors in using track & field's .24 seconds added on to a hand time for the short sprint races in that sport. However, according to the Physical Education Update, .16 seconds is the time needed to be added on to a hand timed specifically for the 40-yard dash or subtracted from legit timing when converting to a hand time: http://www.physicaleducationupdate.com/public/555.cfm

The Bench Press weight was 185 lbs. due to it being an All-Skill Positions camp.
