CenTex Legend Spotlight! Johnny Jones ('76, Lampasas)

  Former CenTex extraordinaire Johnny "Lam" Jones is certainly the fastest football prospect to ever derive from the central region of the Lone Star state.  As a running back at Lampasas High School, he scored numerous long touchdowns and often kept opposing defensive coordinators on their toes. Undoubtedly, he became one of the nation's top football prospects in 1976 as a result of such attributes and chose to sign a letter of intent to the University of Texas. The highlight of his high school career came later that Spring at the state track meet, when he received the baton in 7th place on the anchor leg and ran everyone down in the 4x400 meter relay causing many to dispute his split to this day, which is said to have been in the sub-44 second range. In addition, he was the state champion in the 100 meters and would qualify in that event for the Montreal Olympics, finishing sixth in the finals.  Later on, he ran second leg on the gold medal 4x100 meter relay team for the United States with a time of 38.33, the second fastest ever at that point in time.
After having a good career for the Longhorns in both football and track, Jones was selected as the number 2 player overall in the 1980 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
