September Scoop on CenTex 2016 Prospects!

Cameron Yoe's 2016 RB prospect, Traion Smith has a huge chip on his shoulder as an underrated prospect and may become CenTex's all-time leading rusher in his pursuit to prove that he belongs among the best at his respective position, while trying to help his team win a fourth consecutive state championship.

The list below are "some" underrated and unheralded 2016 prospects that had strong, consistent performances throughout the month of September. Their prospective level of collegiate play is in parenthesis.
Tweener - the prospect either shows flashes of being an FBS prospect or lacks the ideal size but could be more suited for an FCS program.

(FCS) A ball-hawking menace that lines up at safety and comes up hard in run support. 
Donovan Armstrong, CB (Round Rock) 5'8" 165, 4.5
(FBS) Has displayed super glue cover skills against some big time receivers and is well respected in run support. Plays much bigger than his size.
Kae'ron Baker, WR (Navasota) 6'1" 165, 4.6
(FCS) Kind of the forgotten guy in one of the nation's top passing offenses who makes his share of plays on offense and defense.
Jordan Batson, ATH (San Antonio Wagner) 6'1" 173, 4.49
(FBS) Lines up at QB but makes so many plays with his feet that he could most likely end up playing another position in college.

(FBS) Could easily be classified as an "athlete" with his ability to be a force in the secondary at safety along with his display of running the football with audacity.

(FCS) Has continued to improve on his skills as a passer and decision maker while also helping his team to a current high ranking in the state.
Shaft Cubit, ATH (Luling) 5'10" 165, 4.4
(FBS) One of the fastest on-the-field prospects in Central Texas who does a great job of displaying such speed on both the offensive and defensive sides of the football.
Kristian Drake, WR (New Braunfels Canyon) 6'1" 188, 4.47
(FBS) This long-striding, two-stepper has been the victim of a heavily run-oriented offense but still uses his all-state hurdler speed to make big plays when he does get his hands on the ball.

(Tweener) Dukes has joystick like movements and his small stature makes it tough for defenders to see him running between the tackles.

(FBS) Can can make all the throws and puts a hard touch on his spirals. Kind of in the mode of what former CenTex standout Drew Brees was when he was coming out of Austin Westlake.

(FCS) Probably more of an outside linebacker at the next level but uses his high football IQ to find himself in the right place at the right time.
Isaiah Fields, CB (Cibolo Steele) 5'8" 156, 4.4
(FBS) Plays the ball well and has closing speed to keep receivers in check on downfield passes.
Demetri Freeman, DT (Mexia) 6'1" 270, 5.0
(Tweener) Penetrates the line of scrimmage with authority and seems to have a strong nose for the ball.
Matron Gerald, ATH (Mexia) 5'9" 165, 4.5
(FBS) A killer in space with his fancy footwork and could be the perfect slot receiver for any pass-heavy offenses.
Darren Harris, OT (Temple) 6'6" 250, 4.9
(FBS) Developed a mean streak this season and has used his new found aggression to dominate defenders.

(FBS) This extremely underrated prospect is like a bowling ball knocking down any pins in his way when pursuing ball carriers.

(FBS) A muscular built runner with great deceptive speed who also catches the ball well out of the backfield.
Zech Nash-Kelly, WR (Round Rock) 6'2" 190, 4.46
(FBS) Another prospect that plays in an offense that is geared toward the run but has his way with cornerbacks when the ball is thrown his way.
Joshua Nowell, TE/WR (Stephenville) 6'5" 200, 4.7
(FBS) Has had to be used at multiple positions this season due to team's lack of depth but has not disappointed with his play making abilities.
Mark Palacios, OG (San Antonio O'Connor) 6'3" 270, 5.3
(Tweener) Has done a great job of driving defenders back while keeping his arms extended.
Raymonte Prime, ATH (San Antonio Sam Houston) 6'1" 170, 4.6
(FCS) A dual threat QB that has not only won games but has been doing a great job of getting the ball in the hands of his playmakers.
Dominique Ramsey, DB (Converse Judson) 5'8" 175, 4.5
(FBS) A force playing safety that also contributes on the offensive side of the ball.

(FBS) Worked hard in the offseason improving on his speed tremendously. A poor man's Marshawn Lynch.

(Small School) A guy that is unafraid to catch the ball in traffic and can make some plays after the catch.
Tyree Thomas, WR (Round Rock Stony Point) 5'10" 160, 4.48
(FCS) A reliable receiver that can either play in the slot or on the outside. Stock is still growing.
Jermaine Townsend, OG (Temple) 6'3" 290, 5.1
(FBS) Townsend does nothing but move guys out of the way with his massive upper body strength that makes him look like a bully on the field.
Isaiah Viliare, RB (Cedar Park Vista Ridge) 5'9" 175, 4.22 (hand time)
(FBS) Probably the fastest guy in CenTex in terms of football speed that will play receiver at the next level with his ability to expose defenders in space.
Avery Williams, WR (Mexia) 6'3" 185, 4.6
(FBS) This prospect has great ball awareness in his ability to come down with the football in tight coverage while intercepting multiple passes on defense.
DeBraylon Williams, ATH (Hillsboro) 6'0" 166, 4.65
(FBS) Don't be fooled by his 40 time because this guy is a true 7-11 type of wideout that cannot seemed to be covered and it doesn't hurt that he believes he cannot be covered.
Michael Wilson, OT (Round Rock) 6'9" 320, 5.4
(FBS) Big Mike has done nothing but tremendously improve on his skills and has used his massive, long frame to keep defenders going in the opposite direction of the quarterback.

TO ALL PARENTS OF FOOTBALL PROSPECTS!

As an independent scout, I definitely appreciate any and all high school coaches that do what's entailed in this letter. The author (a HS coach who shall remain anonymous) couldn't have said it any better!

"Let it be known.  Recruiting is a process.  As high school coaches we expose players so that college coaches can do their part of the process.  We send emails with each kid's information and a link to their hudl highlights.  After schools get this information, they start their part of the process.  First thing that happens is the recruiter for that geographical area will watch the prospects film and decide if he is worthy to be shown to the staff.  If he makes it past that point the next thing is a prospect will be graded on his measurables.  Height, weight, 40 time, and 5-10-5 shuttle.  Most of the time it is on a 5 point scale with 5 being the highest.  If your son is short, small or slow for his position he will grade out low.  If he is lucky enough to be shown to the entire staff, each coach will chime in on if the prospect can help them.  Also, missing in this equation is the staff have already decided how many spots they will use scholarships on for each position group.  So each coach is fighting for spots.  After that the head coach must sign off and approve, thus offering the young man a scholarship.  If head coaches Nick Saban and Gus Malzahn do not want an undersized or slow player there is nothing the assistant coaches and surely not any high school coaches can do to make them want that player.  So if your son gets an offer, appreciate it.  It's a blessing.  This post is just to educate some people on the process.  Before y'all think that I have a couple of D1 scholarships in my back pocket, I don't.  I put kids in front of the door, not give them offers."
